Selling a 6C 1750 from the who’s who of Italian motoring

There is a number of 6C 1750 Alfa-Romeos offered for sale on PreWarCar at the moment, but we’d want to share this particular car with you here. Since we are real suckers for old-fashioned sleuthing we’d want to highlight its story today as it seems that the current owner of this car really enjoyed doing just that when researching and restoring his 1929 6C 1750 Sport. The seller’s blurb almost reads like a?who’s who?of the Italian motoring industry of the 1920s and 1930s, so take a deep breath for this summary.

1929 Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 Sport

The car was first registered in Milan in June 1929 to Alfa-Romeo manager Gerolamo Merlini, wearing a four-seater Torpedo body by Pirola. We couldn’t find any on that?carrozzeria?other than a Francesco Pirola of Milan who ran an Alfa-Romeo dealership at the time and entered a?Ghia-bodied 6C?in the 1929 Mille Miglia. That has to be the same? Anyway: another engineer purchased and sold it, with the third owner becoming Francesco Severi, who would later race for Ferrari. He owned the car very briefly, selling it on to a marquis Giovanni Passari in October 1935, when it was registered wearing a saloon body. What exactly that body was remains shrouded in mystery, but the fact is that the marquis enjoyed the car a bit longer, although War intervened. He modified it to run on a gas generator though and gave it to two farmers who worked his land in December 1942. They re-modified the engine and got rid of the body, now turning it into a pick-up – it’s starting to remind us of?this story, especially after the original engine was replaced by a Perkins diesel! The six-in-line was preserved though, and the Alfa-Romeo was sold as a tired workhorse but with its original engine to a local mechanic named Pietro Nardone in 1972. Nardone kept it for 30 years in a corner of his workshop, only being persuaded to part with it in 2002.

There’s no doubt that by this time the car was overdue for a major restoration, and this is where the search for the, or at least an, original body started. When the new owner heard of an original Spider cabriolet body by carrozzeria Viberti of Turin being available, he jumped to the chance. Further research brought the origins of this particular body to the light, fitted originally to another 6C 1750 Sport built only a few months earlier. With the chassis badly rusted, the body in dire straits and the original engine cracked, the owner took to the challenge of restoring the car, finishing it in 2007 and taking part in a number of events since.
